Directed by Kathryne Jennings, Rouse conceived, wrote, and performed Vamps and Scamps, a one-woman cabaret show at Brown University's Grant Recital Hall in 2004. This performance was Rouse's culminating project for her three years of voice study with Jennings. Vamps and Scamps was a character-based piece, dedicated to brash and brassy women of song, such as Delila, Carmen, Miss Otis, Marilyn, as well as strippers, scam artists, gypsies, drunks, and floozies of every kind imaginable. Rouse brought together selections from popular and classical composers, and original music written by herself and composer Brendan Padgett. Selections included songs by Cole Porter, Antonin Dvorak, Stephen Sondheim, Georges Bizet, Camille Saint-Sans, and Marc Blitzstein, to name a few. Vamps and Scamps was a fun and flashy tribute to all the naughty, sassy women we love so much, but could never, never bring home to mama! |
